Discord is establishing its first dedicated engineering hub outside San Francisco in Lisbon, and this is a founding IT role for the EMEA region. You will stand up and run the full employee technology surface across EMEA from the Lisbon office, serving as the trusted IT leader and coverage anchor for European hours. This is a highly independent senior role requiring someone who can navigate ambiguity, wear multiple hats, and transform a greenfield into a fully operational IT environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Establish IT infrastructure for the region starting with Lisbon: physical technology footprint, local and regional vendor/ISP relationships, and foundational day-to-day processes
- Own the complete IT surface end-to-end: identity and access management, device and endpoint management (Mac and Windows), office network and connectivity, AV and meeting rooms, and SaaS platforms
- Implement automation and integration across systems using vendor-native APIs and custom scripting to unify disparate tools
- Manage regional onboarding and offboarding to ensure new employees are equipped on day one and properly deprovisioned on exit
- Serve as EMEA timezone coverage anchor, resolving issues that would otherwise stall due to timezone gaps and maintaining async handoffs with San Francisco
- Identify recurring workflow breakdowns and automate them away, measuring outcomes in time and risk saved
- Participate in on-call rotations
You will be measured by leverage and outcomes, not ticket volume. This role requires excellent written communication and async discipline, as you will often be the only IT person in the room. A business-problem mindset, collaborative approach, and secure-by-design posture are essential.
Requirements:
- 8+ years of experience managing IT systems in high-growth tech companies
- Hands-on experience across most of the employee technology surface with real depth in several areas: identity management (Okta), device management (Jamf for Mac, Intune for Windows), corporate networking (wireless, DNS/DHCP, VPN, Zero Trust access), SaaS and productivity (Google Workspace), collaboration and conferencing (Discord), and meeting-room AV
- Track record of operating independently through ambiguity, ideally standing something up from scratch
- Strong automation skills: comfortable writing working scripts (Python preferred; using AI to write scripts is acceptable), plus no-code and low-code workflows
- Excellent written communication and async discipline
- Business-problem mindset and collaborative, low-ego, secure-by-design posture
Bonus:
- Working knowledge of GDPR and EU data-protection expectations
Note: This role requires 5 days per week in the Lisbon office.
