GPTZero is hiring an Investigations Engineer to join its research and investigations team in Toronto. The role sits at the intersection of AI detection, investigative journalism, and data engineering. You'll build and operate the research engine that identifies undisclosed hallucinations and AI-generated content ("AI slop") across the web, publishing findings that have earned front-page coverage in the Financial Times, Forbes, Bloomberg, and other major outlets. Key responsibilities include: using GPTZero's AI detection and hallucination models to surface compelling examples of AI slop in publishing and online; synthesizing data into well-written reports, visualizations, and interactive experiences; building search engine query generators and targeted web crawlers for document collection at scale; creating automations to monitor social feeds and generate investigation leads; developing ML ranking and classification systems to detect AI-fabricated content; building robust data processing pipelines that operate reliably at scale; and iterating on detection models based on performance across new domains. You'll work directly with the CTO (ex-Uber self-driving, Facebook, 3 ML patents), the AI research lead (PhD University of Toronto, ex-AWS), and the CEO (ex-Bellingcat, Microsoft, BBC investigative journalism). The broader team includes engineers from Google, Meta, Microsoft, Bloomberg, Uber, and leading AI research institutes. Required qualifications: 2+ years Python experience building resilient data pipelines and long-running jobs; 1+ years SQL (ideally PostgreSQL) for data management; data analysis and visualization skills; experience with web scraping and search at scale (search engines, LLMs, OCR, crawling tools); basic cloud infrastructure (AWS); and an entrepreneurial mindset for bootstrapping data acquisition approaches and identifying newsworthy content. Bonus skills include web development, applied ML for ranking/calibration, infrastructure-as-code, OSINT and evidence verification, and experience working with media/journalists.
