GPTZero is building the leading AI detection platform to restore trust and transparency on the internet. The company empowers educators, students, journalists, marketers, and writers to navigate AI-generated content at scale, with millions of users and institutions relying on the platform. As an Investigations Engineer, you'll work at the intersection of investigative journalism and AI technology. Your primary mission is to build and operate the research engine that discovers undisclosed hallucinations and AI-generated content across the web, then synthesize findings into front-page investigations. Recent work has produced widely covered reports on AI slop in top consulting firms and academic publishing, earning coverage in the Financial Times, Forbes, Bloomberg, The Telegraph, and The Times of India. Key responsibilities include: using AI detection and hallucination models to identify compelling examples of AI slop on the internet; building search engine query generators and targeted crawlers for web-scale document collection; creating data processing pipelines that operate robustly at scale; synthesizing data into well-written prose and compelling visualizations; building ML ranking and classification systems to detect fabricated documents; automating monitoring of social feeds to generate investigation leads; and improving models based on performance across new domains. You'll work directly with the founding team: Alex (CTO, ex-Uber self-driving and Facebook, 3 ML patents); George (AI research lead, PhD University of Toronto, ex-AWS); and Edward (CEO, ex-Bellingcat, Microsoft, BBC investigative journalism). The broader team includes engineers from Google, Meta, Microsoft, Bloomberg, Uber, and leading AI research labs. Required qualifications: 2+ years Python experience building resilient data pipelines and long-running jobs; 1+ year SQL (ideally PostgreSQL) for data management; data analysis and visualization skills; experience with web scraping and search at scale (search engines, LLMs, OCR, crawling tools); basic cloud infrastructure experience (AWS); entrepreneurial mindset for bootstrapping data acquisition approaches and identifying newsworthy content. Bonus skills: webpage building/frontend development; applied ML for ranking and calibration; infrastructure-as-code and container tooling; OSINT and evidence verification; data discovery in novel domains; experience working with media and journalists.
