GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Software Engineer to join the Security section's Vulnerability Management team. You'll contribute to the data layer powering GitLab's vulnerability and dependency management capabilities, working on systems that ingest, store, index, and query security report data.
In this role, you'll design and develop well-scoped features within backend systems, with a strong focus on PostgreSQL and scalable architecture. You'll work across GitLab's Ruby on Rails monolith and newer microservices (Go, Rust), building depth in database design and the security domain. The team includes two Staff and two Senior Software Engineers distributed across the UK, Poland, the Netherlands, and India, providing mentorship and clear technical context.
Key responsibilities include: designing and shipping features that improve data-ingestion reliability and query performance; developing the PostgreSQL data layer for vulnerability and dependency management; building and improving systems using Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL; contributing to third-party security system integrations; participating in technical design and code reviews; collaborating with product and engineering partners; delivering iteratively within GitLab's monthly release cycle; and applying security-first thinking to system design.
You'll bring professional backend engineering experience shipping features to production, working knowledge of PostgreSQL (indexes, query plans, schema design), professional experience with Ruby on Rails, Go, or Python, and the ability to take features from description through production. Clear written communication, comfort with remote/async work across time zones, and fluency with AI tools are expected. Security domain experience is helpful but transferable experience is welcome.
