GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer for the EMEA region to join a fully remote team. In this role, you will own backend features and improvements from problem clarification through production delivery and follow-up. You'll work within a product area, collaborating with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security teams to deliver predictably while maintaining code quality, security, performance, and maintainability.
You will design, implement, test, and ship backend features with minimal guidance, working in Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern languages. Your responsibilities include building production-ready code that is maintainable, secure, observable, and performant. You'll design and maintain APIs, background jobs, integrations, and bounded service functionality, working with data models, migrations, indexes, and query optimization.
The role emphasizes ownership: your code will run on a platform used by millions of users. You'll participate in code and design reviews as a learning loop, not a gate, helping you grow your engineering judgment quickly. You'll investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures, identify technical debt, and propose practical improvements. Operational support and on-call participation may be required depending on your team's ownership model.
