GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer to join its EMEA team. In this role, you will own backend features and improvements from problem clarification through production delivery and follow-up. You'll work within a product area, collaborating with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security teams to deliver predictably while contributing to code quality, security, performance, and maintainability.
Key responsibilities include designing, implementing, testing, and shipping backend features with minimal guidance using Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern languages. You'll build production-ready code that is maintainable, secure, observable, and performant. This includes designing and maintaining APIs, background jobs, integrations, bounded service functionality, data models, migrations, indexes, and query behavior. You'll add and improve automated test coverage (unit, integration, contract, end-to-end) and review colleagues' code for correctness, maintainability, security, performance, and operational risk.
Operational ownership is central to the role: you'll investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures at the feature boundary, identify technical debt, propose practical improvements, and participate in on-call or operational support as needed. You'll leverage AI productively in daily work, validate its output, and understand its limitations.
You'll bring professional experience building and shipping production backend applications with strong fundamentals in programming, APIs, databases, testing, debugging, and performance. Adaptability across languages is valued over single-language mastery. You should demonstrate the ability to take features from clarification through delivery independently while knowing when to seek input. Sound judgment about security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational risk is essential, along with understanding modular backend boundaries and coupling consequences. Strong written communication and effective remote, asynchronous collaboration are required.
