GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer to join the team responsible for database upgrade experience. You'll build and maintain systems that make database upgrades safe, fast, and predictable for both GitLab.com and self-managed customers.
In this role, you'll work with Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL to develop the infrastructure that applies database schema changes during upgrades and catches problems before they reach production. Key responsibilities include:
- Build and test systems that safely apply database schema changes during upgrades for GitLab.com and self-managed customers
- Develop and maintain testing frameworks that validate schema changes before production deployment
- Implement checks and safeguards that prevent failed or slow upgrades
- Review and improve database schema migrations from other engineers to ensure safety, consistency, and backward compatibility
- Work cross-functionally with operations, packaging, distribution, and QA teams
- Document upgrade procedures, schema change patterns, and migration best practices
- Partner with operations teams to identify needs and continuously improve upgrade safety and speed
You'll succeed by shipping incremental improvements and progressively taking ownership of larger pieces of work. The team operates in an all-remote, asynchronous environment with mentorship and opportunities to grow in backend engineering, system design, and reliability.
Required experience includes professional software engineering with PostgreSQL in large production environments, proficiency with Ruby on Rails, ability to reason about software design and system-level trade-offs, strong written communication for async work, self-directed work style, and alignment with GitLab's values of transparency and open source contribution.
