GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer to join its DevSecOps platform team. In this role, you will own backend features and improvements from problem clarification through production deployment and monitoring. You'll work cross-functionally with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security teams to deliver reliable, secure, and performant code.
Key responsibilities include designing and implementing backend features in Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern languages; building production-grade APIs, background jobs, integrations, and service functionality; writing and improving automated test coverage (unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end); reviewing code for correctness, maintainability, security, and performance; investigating build, test, and deployment failures; and identifying and proposing solutions for technical debt. You'll operate in a remote-first, asynchronous environment where clear written communication and self-direction are essential.
You'll bring professional experience building and shipping production backend applications with strong fundamentals in programming, APIs, databases, testing, debugging, and performance optimization. While experience with Ruby/Rails or Go is valued, GitLab prioritizes adaptability and the ability to learn new languages over mastery of a single stack. You'll work with minimal guidance, knowing when to seek help, and will collaborate with tenured engineers who treat code review as a learning opportunity. The role emphasizes using AI productively as a daily tool while maintaining judgment about its limitations.
