GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer to join its DevSecOps platform team. In this role, you will own backend features and improvements from problem clarification through production deployment and monitoring. You'll work cross-functionally with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security teams to deliver reliable, secure, and performant code.
Key responsibilities include designing and implementing backend features in Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern languages; building production-grade APIs, background jobs, integrations, and service functionality; writing and improving automated test coverage (unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end); conducting code reviews focused on correctness, maintainability, security, and performance; investigating and resolving build, test, and deployment failures; and identifying and proposing solutions for technical debt. You'll operate the systems you build, participate in on-call rotations where applicable, and leverage AI tools productively in your daily engineering work.
You'll bring professional experience shipping production backend applications with strong fundamentals in programming, APIs, databases, testing, debugging, and performance optimization. You're adaptable across languages and frameworks, capable of taking features from clarification to delivery independently while knowing when to seek input. You have sound judgment about security, reliability, performance, and operational risk, understand modular backend architecture and coupling consequences, and communicate clearly in a remote, asynchronous environment.
