Thumbtack is a home services marketplace that helps millions of homeowners manage repairs, maintenance, and improvements. The Field Enablement team designs and delivers learning experiences that drive performance across Thumbtack's employee base, 300,000+ local service professionals, and customers.
As an Instructional Design Specialist, you will architect learning experiences that enable frontline teams to become proficient quickly and deliver consistent, high-quality service. You'll own complex learning programs end-to-end, from needs analysis through evaluation, partnering with subject matter experts, project managers, and frontline leaders to translate business goals into effective learning strategies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead end-to-end instructional design for high-impact learning programs, managing scope, sequencing, and tradeoffs across multiple initiatives
- Design learning ecosystems using the 70/20/10 model, Action Mapping, and performance consulting to drive measurable behavior change
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to surface performance gaps, reframe solution requests, and align on instructional approaches
- Develop assessments and evaluation plans measuring program effectiveness across Kirkpatrick Levels 1–3, connecting outcomes to business performance
- Contribute to content governance, peer review, and instructional design standards to ensure quality and scalability
- Use AI tools (Claude, OpenAI) at builder level to design and iterate asynchronous learning content
- Create multimedia assets including screen recordings, short-form video, and AI-assisted voiceover content
Requirements:
- 4–6 years of experience in instructional design, curriculum development, or performance consulting, preferably in high-growth tech or call center environments
- Strong portfolio demonstrating ownership of complex learning programs across multiple instructional modalities
- Expertise in instructional design models (ADDIE, SAM) and adult learning theory; working knowledge of Action Mapping or performance consulting
- Demonstrated hands-on experience using AI tools (Claude/OpenAI) to build asynchronous learning content at builder level—active use in design workflows, not just familiarity
- Strong project management and stakeholder partnership skills; proven ability to independently own projects from needs analysis through evaluation
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally (Product, Engineering, Ops) and communicate design rationale to diverse audiences
- Learner-first mindset with commitment to continuous improvement, experimentation, and high-quality design standards
