fal is a generative media infrastructure platform that powers AI products at scale. The company provides high-performance inference, orchestration, and observability tools for developers and enterprises building AI-native applications.
You will own the accounting for fal's compute infrastructure costs—the company's largest and fastest-growing cost base. This includes GPU capacity, cloud and data center commitments, colocation, and hosting arrangements. You'll build scalable accounting processes and automation to replace manual, spreadsheet-driven work.
Key responsibilities:
**Compute Cost Accounting**: Account for GPU and cloud provider agreements end-to-end, including reserved and committed capacity, usage-based billing, credits, and true-ups. Collaborate with Procurement to maintain a reliable, systems-based schedule of all compute commitments, prepayments, and deposits. Capitalize GPU servers, networking, and data center equipment; manage depreciation, disposals, and impairment reviews. Classify compute costs correctly between cost of revenue and operating expense (R&D and internal use) to support gross margin reporting.
**Process Automation & Systems**: Build AI agents, scripts, and automated workflows to keep compute accounting accurate, timely, and scalable. Use AI tools to assess usage data, match invoices to POs and contracts, flag anomalies, and draft journal entries and reconciliations.
**Close, Audit & Technical Areas**: Streamline recurring close work with systems and AI. Collaborate with Infrastructure and Engineering on capacity changes and with Strategic Finance on forecasts and cost-per-unit analysis. Ensure audit readiness with clear documentation and policies. Review compute and colocation agreements with Technical Accounting, Legal, and Procurement to identify embedded leases (ASC 842) and other accounting impacts. Support ERP system implementation for compute cost data flows and account structure.
**Stakeholder Partnerships**: Partner closely with Finance, Operations, Engineering, Procurement, Legal, and Strategic Finance. Act as the accounting owner for compute vendors, translating contracts, usage data, and invoices into correct accounting and clear cost insights.
This is a hands-on, high-ownership role requiring strong technical accounting knowledge, process-building mindset, and ability to work with complex infrastructure arrangements.
**Requirements:**
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably combining public accounting and operational experience at a technology company (cloud infrastructure, SaaS, or AI strongly preferred)
- Builder mindset with ability to design automated, reliable, and scalable processes
- Best-in-class attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to translate technical accounting for non-technical audiences
- High agency: set priorities independently, make decisions, and drive work to completion
- Strong understanding of AI development and platform infrastructure landscape
- Experience at high-growth software, cloud infrastructure, AI, or capital-intensive technology companies
- AI and automation first: use latest AI tools or build your own to automate reconciliations, analyze large datasets, and streamline work
