Hex is a collaborative analytics and data science workspace that enables anyone to explore data using natural language, with or without code. The company has raised over $100M from top-tier investors including Sequoia and a16z, and serves thousands of customers including Ramp, Figma, Stubhub, and Anthropic.
You will lead Hex's talent function, building a repeatable, data-driven recruiting engine that authentically reflects the company's culture. Hex hires for "out-of-distribution" talent—people who are smart, unconventional, and irreplaceable. Your mission is to develop an independent view of what exceptional looks like at Hex and translate that into a scalable hiring process.
Key responsibilities:
- Own and communicate the hiring bar across the organization. Create interview kits with thoughtful rubrics, train interviewers, and run calibration sessions to ensure consistent evaluation at scale.
- Redesign the recruiting funnel to get real signal earlier. Move beyond resumes to give candidates opportunities to demonstrate capabilities before significant time investment from the team.
- Source talent through unconventional channels: market maps, networks, alumni, communities, and silver medalists. Avoid relying solely on standard recruiting platforms.
- Build recruiting infrastructure and systems. Own the tech stack (currently migrating to Ashby with AI-assisted sourcing), automation, and strategic decisions about where to invest human effort versus technology.
- Personally close the hardest searches and own compensation, leveling, and equity conversations alongside Finance. You'll remain hands-on with closing even as the team scales.
- Lead and develop the recruiting team (recruiters, sourcers, coordinators, operations). Raise the bar on the function while building systems that scale to 500+ employees.
- Own the candidate experience and employer value proposition. Shape the company's EVP, content, events, and the memorable impression candidates take from the interview process.
You should have a clear theory of talent and strong opinions on what recruiting systematically overvalues, when pedigree matters, and how to assess trajectory. You're a true partner to business leaders, able to understand hiring needs and co-design roles. You're a builder who defaults to increasing leverage before adding headcount. You've successfully taken over and elevated existing teams, raising standards while retaining talent. You're direct, warm, and low-ego—willing to name difficult issues rather than manage around them.
This role reports to the Head of People and is based in San Francisco or New York, with an expectation of in-office presence at least three days per week. In your first six months, you'll personally run searches alongside the team; this is a hands-on leadership role, not a director-from-above position.
Requirements:
- Proven experience taking over and scaling recruiting teams
- Track record of building data-driven, repeatable recruiting processes
- Experience with recruiting technology and automation
- Ability to source talent through non-traditional channels
- Strong partnership skills with business leaders
- Direct, warm communication style with low ego
- Willingness to remain hands-on with closing and sourcing even in a leadership role
