Besxar Space Industries is building off-Earth foundries that leverage the natural ultra-high vacuum of space as a manufacturing input. The company's Fabships are designed to produce ultra-high-yield semiconductor materials at purity and defect performance levels difficult or impossible to achieve on Earth. This is real hardware development—not a science project—requiring rapid iteration, disciplined execution, and first-principles engineering.
As Head of Mechanical Design Engineering, you will lead mechanical design and R&D for Besxar Fabships, owning major assemblies and translating mission and business requirements into manufacturable hardware. You will work hands-on across concepting, CAD, release, build, integration, test, failure learning, and design iteration, partnering closely with systems, electrical, software, materials, manufacturing, and test teams.
Key responsibilities include: leading mechanical design from concept through detailed design and integration strategy; directly owning major CAD assemblies and product structure/BOMs for critical systems; designing with metallic materials and space-rated components; translating system requirements into manufacturable designs balancing performance, mass, stiffness, thermal behavior, contamination sensitivity, serviceability, cost, and schedule; performing hand calculations, tolerance stack-ups, GD&T, fit/interface studies, and FEA; leading prototype builds and hands-on assembly/integration; applying lessons learned from prior designs, build feedback, and test data to improve each hardware revision; partnering with internal technicians and external vendors through fabrication, inspection, assembly, and verification; leading design reviews and anomaly resolution; defining mechanical engineering processes, CAD conventions, design checklists, and part libraries as the team scales; and mentoring other engineers.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or similar engineering discipline (or equivalent); 5+ years progressive mechanical design engineering experience developing complex hardware from concept through build, integration, and test; demonstrated ownership of large CAD assemblies for highly integrated electromechanical, aerospace, or high-consequence systems; strong proficiency in modern 3D CAD (SolidWorks, NX, Creo, CATIA, or similar) and 2D drawing creation with BOM and PDM/PLM workflows; strong mechanical design fundamentals including GD&T, tolerance analysis, material/process selection, fastener design, structural load paths, and DFM/DFA; hands-on build and assembly experience; experience designing with metallic hardware and space-rated or high-reliability components; demonstrated ability to apply lessons learned to improve robustness and manufacturability; strong written and verbal communication; and ability to operate as a self-starter in ambiguous environments.
Preferred experience includes spacecraft, satellite, launch, propulsion, robotics, or vacuum/thermal/vibration/shock hardware development; precision structures, mechanisms, thermal-mechanical packaging, contamination-sensitive hardware, or semiconductor/process equipment design.
