ClassDojo is a K-8 education platform used in 95% of US K-8 schools and by 1 in 4 American families, reaching approximately 50 million kids in 180 countries. The company is expanding beyond its core classroom communication product into new categories: Dojo Islands (a shared online world for kids), Dojo Tutor (connecting families with tutors), Sparks (an AI tutor), and Login with Dojo (safe identity verification for children online).
As Head of Legal, you will join the leadership team and report directly to the co-founders, owning all legal functions: product, privacy, commercial, corporate, employment, IP, regulatory, and litigation. You will inherit a foundation that includes a small in-house team, trusted outside counsel, and established commercial and privacy processes, with the mandate to elevate them significantly.
Your first 18 months will focus on three core objectives:
1. Make Dojo the most trusted company with children's data by publicly staking positions on the hardest questions in kids' tech (AI talking to children, kids playing together online, monetization models) before regulators decide for the company. Identify and win relevant seals and certifications. Make privacy a key differentiator for districts. Handle regulatory inquiries in ways that protect both product and reputation.
2. Make legal a catalyst for speed by being pulled into product, engineering, and partnership decisions early, finding versions that can ship, identifying genuine blockers, and turning standard contracts around in hours and product questions in two days. Develop playbooks for district data agreements, partnerships, and vendor deals to eliminate starting from zero each time.
3. Build a legal team that outperforms teams five times its size by leading and growing a small, high-performing in-house team; holding outside counsel to budget and standards; integrating AI into contracts, data agreements, and privacy reviews; and owning M&A, financing, and board matters alongside the CFO.
The company emphasizes that trust is the moat, and the right Head of Legal deepens it every quarter while teams ship faster. The best legal answer is usually a version of yes with sensible guardrails, reached early. The company believes AI now enables a small team of exceptional lawyers to accomplish what previously required fifteen.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Led legal at a consumer tech company of 100–1,000 people where product and engineering create most value
- Product and business leaders who've worked with you say unprompted that you made them faster and found answers they hadn't seen; you end advice with what you'd do and own the decision once made
- Owned privacy for a consumer product, ideally for kids, across COPPA, FERPA, state student privacy laws, CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, and new AI regulations; if depth is narrower, you learn fast and think clearly about these areas
- Comfortable running M&A, financings, and board work alongside a CFO
- Led talent-dense teams and managed multiple outside firms to budget; know the right specialist for most problems
- Rebuilt legal work with AI yourself and can explain concretely how three lawyers plus specialists can match fifteen
- Turn messy problems into two or three key decisions; write concisely; hold positions without starting wars; change your mind when facts change; move decisions on trust rather than title
- Move fast enough to make people slightly nervous; raise the bar on ambition as much as rigor
BONUS:
- 10+ years in law, ideally including child-directed products or student data
- Time in strategy consulting, operating, finance, or engineering
- Stepped into an existing legal function and made it markedly better, or led a distributed team
- Can tell Dojo's story to regulators, reporters, or partners and leave them on the company's side
