Salary: USD 200,000 - 260,000 / annual
General Matter is a mission-driven nuclear energy company backed by top-tier investors, focused on strengthening America's capacity in nuclear fuel production and energy security. We are seeking an experienced Head of IT to lead our technology infrastructure and drive initiatives that support our engineering teams and business growth.
In this role, you will oversee all IT systems, implement best practices, and ensure our infrastructure scales reliably as the company grows. You will work closely with our engineering teams to gather requirements, evaluate, design, deploy, and support Microsoft enterprise software platforms and related technologies. You will be responsible for maintaining highly resilient, high-performance, scalable systems; ensuring uptime of critical business systems; driving security and performance improvements; and building automation at scale to enhance overall efficiency.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with engineering teams to design and implement enterprise software solutions
- Managing and maintaining resilient, high-performance, scalable infrastructure
- Recommending and implementing improvements using change control methodology
- Designing and delivering creative solutions across diverse internal business units
- Defining and documenting standards and best practices for systems design, testing, and implementation
- Ensuring the health and uptime of IT core infrastructure
- Driving security and performance optimization
- Building automation to improve efficiency

**Requirements:**
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering with 3+ years of systems administration experience; OR 5+ years of professional systems administration experience without a degree
- Experience with servers in physical and virtualized environments
- 5+ years of experience with Active Directory, Kerberos, Entra ID, and multi-platform authentication/identification environments
- 5+ years of experience with Windows-based systems and services in both physical and virtual environments (setup, configuration, upgrade, management, troubleshooting)
- 5+ years of experience monitoring mission-critical enterprise environments
**Preferred Skills:**
- Expertise in creating repeatable, reliable, scalable systems architectures with high availability, fault tolerance, performance tuning, and monitoring
- Development experience with web, Python, PowerShell, and bash scripting
- Linux administration experience
- Automation platforms (Ansible, Salt, Chef)
- Networking expertise (IPv4, IPSEC VPN, SSL-VPN, SD-WAN, switching, routing, firewalls, HA architecture)
- Comfort working with mission-critical and sensitive systems
- Excellent communication skills with internal/external customers, vendors, and management
