Benchling is the AI platform for biotech R&D, used by over 200,000 scientists globally and more than half of the world's top 50 biopharma companies. The company is rebuilding biotech for the AI era by embedding clean, structured scientific data and AI agents directly into R&D workflows.
You will lead Benchling's Enterprise Applications function as part of the CIO/CISO organization. This role owns the business application portfolio spanning Salesforce (including CPQ/RevCloud), NetSuite, Workday, Certinia, Gainsight, Zendesk, Atlassian, Slack, Workato, and the broader SaaS estate. You will manage the full lifecycle of these platforms—from architecture and selection through configuration, integration, vendor management, and process design—and set the target-state portfolio and integration standards the company builds against.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own the SaaS portfolio architecture and integration standards. Govern platform selection, rationalization, and lifecycle decisions with cost and risk data backing each call.
- Lead high-visibility revenue programs across quote-to-cash, pricing and packaging, and consumption billing. Assess quickly, shape outcomes, and provide clear guidance on delivery timelines.
- Systematically remove manual work through automation. Take configuration, change management, testing, release, access review, and ticket triage and instrument them for measurable throughput and quality gains per person.
- Embed AI into team operations and platforms. Partner with the AI and Data Engineering team to build practical AI capabilities where they genuinely add value.
- Expand self-service across Finance, GTM, People, Legal, and CX teams. Build documentation, guardrails, and in-product help that lets internal teams solve problems safely, with measured deflection targets.
- Build audit-ready IT general controls ahead of public-company requirements. Design and operate controls across financial systems covering access provisioning, segregation of duties, change management, and evidence capture.
- Grow and develop the team. You'll inherit a manager running operations, an integration architect, Salesforce delivery capacity, and a contractor bench. Optimize the full-time and contractor mix and hire deliberately against capability gaps.
- Partner across the company with Finance, RevOps, Sales, CX, People, and Legal leaders on roadmap prioritization and process changes.
The foundation is already in place: the integration practice is live, a recent identity re-architecture cut Salesforce access tickets by 65% in three months, and the roadmap is prioritized by business impact. This is the moment to scale—Benchling is growing, the revenue and finance architecture is being rebuilt for the next stage, and AI is redefining what a business systems team can accomplish. The opportunity is to design a function whose output grows faster than headcount, where automation and AI absorb operational load and internal stakeholders increasingly solve their own problems by design.
You will report to the CIO/CISO and be a peer to the leaders of Technology Operations and Support, Security Engineering, Security Operations, and Trust and Compliance.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years in enterprise or business applications
- 5+ years leading teams in a fast-paced startup environment, including managing managers and owning a budget
- Ownership of a multi-platform SaaS portfolio at scale spanning at least CRM, ERP, and HRIS, plus the integration layer
- Deep Salesforce experience, including quote-to-cash and CPQ/RevCloud in a company with real pricing and packaging complexity
- Hands-on familiarity with an integration platform (Workato, MuleSoft, Boomi, or Tray) and a point of view on running an integration practice
- Track record of measurable automation outcomes with documented metrics, baselines, and current state
- Practical experience applying AI to enterprise application work with judgment to distinguish real value from demos
- Built internal self-service that reduced request volume and can explain adoption strategy
- Scaled systems controls through a company's move to public-company financial reporting, including SOX IT general controls, access reviews, change management to auditable standards, and evidence automation
- Experience taking over mid-flight programs and stabilizing them, including managing stakeholder expectations on timeline changes
- Strong vendor management: contract negotiation, renewal strategy, and portfolio rationalization with documented savings
- Clear written communication with non-technical audiences; ability to explain systems and process tradeoffs to CFOs and sales teams
- Curiosity about life science (prior industry knowledge not required)
NICE TO HAVE:
- NetSuite, Certinia, or Workday ownership
- Experience with Snowflake, Salesforce Data Cloud, or analytics platforms as part of the application data layer
- Experience managing a distributed contractor or partner bench alongside full-time staff
