Shapeways is a digital manufacturing company based in Eindhoven, Netherlands, offering production-grade on-demand manufacturing services for low-volume, high-tech applications including medical devices, UAVs, drones, and robotics.
You will lead the engineering organization day-to-day, managing a growing team of 7 engineers operating a platform of approximately 40 microservices. Reporting to the CTO, you own the technical direction and architecture of the company's bespoke MES (Manufacturing Execution System) and ERP systems—critical competitive advantages in the on-demand manufacturing market.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the engineering team through planning, unblocking work, and maintaining delivery across the service estate (core stack: PHP/Symfony on MySQL)
- Motivating, coaching, and hiring team members while structuring workflows as the team scales
- Prioritizing and driving AI investments to increase development velocity, software quality, and code robustness
- Owning project prioritization and sequencing, translating requests from operations, sales, and marketing into realistic execution plans
- Contributing hands-on to the codebase on your own projects and features
- Serving as the primary point of contact for engineering questions from the broader business, escalating architecture and system-design decisions to the CTO
- Maintaining visibility of delivery, surfacing risks early, and reporting status to leadership
You bring 2-4 years of engineering management experience with a track record of leading, mentoring, and coordinating teams. You have strong hands-on expertise with PHP/Symfony (or comparable modern web frameworks) and relational databases like MySQL. You're genuinely interested in people leadership—motivating teams, unblocking individuals, and fostering a positive working environment. You have solid project management instincts, can break down work, sequence priorities, and keep small teams focused. You're comfortable working cross-functionally with non-technical stakeholders and can communicate trade-offs and push back constructively. Experience with modern infrastructure practices (Kubernetes, GitOps, containerization) is valued. You have a pragmatic, get-it-done attitude and are eager to grow into a broader leadership role.
Shapeways offers a fast-growing environment with significant growth opportunities, an open and high-trust culture in an international setting, and values teamwork, adaptability, and continuous learning. Benefits include free lunch/coffee/tea, pension scheme, 25 vacation days plus 3 extra national holidays, travel expense coverage, and remote work flexibility.
