Gusto is seeking a Head of Engineering to lead the AI Platform group, an organization of approximately 25 engineers responsible for building AI agents and the underlying platform that powers them across the company. The platform is already in production and running multiple agents; the focus now is on scaling, clarifying team charters, and defining the boundary between shared platform ownership and product-team customization.
In this role, you will own the technical strategy for building agents that assist and automate work for small business owners. You'll set the technical direction and roadmap for the group, making ongoing decisions about what the shared platform should own versus what product teams build themselves as adoption grows across Gusto.
You will lead and empower the managers and tech leads within the group, supporting existing leadership, hiring ahead of growth, and building strong leadership structures as teams scale. You'll establish engineering standards for agent behavior, treating prompts, tools, and policies as production code. You'll own the evaluation and guardrail approach that keeps non-deterministic systems reliable and cost-aware.
The role requires close collaboration with product managers, designers, and data scientists embedded in the group, as well as cross-functional partnerships with teams across Gusto that build on the platform. You'll represent AI engineering to senior leadership and ensure the group's work aligns with Gusto's broader AI strategy.
The AI Platform group is highly cross-functional and already includes product managers, designers, and data scientists alongside engineers. The platform is built on LangGraph and the Vercel AI SDK. You'll champion AI-native ways of working and build a team culture that embraces emerging AI practices. This is a high-impact role with considerable room for the group to grow.
