Eight Sleep is a sleep fitness company building advanced hardware, software, and AI technology to optimize human recovery and performance. You will lead testing and validation of Eight Sleep's hardware products as a Hardware Test Engineer, Special Projects. This is end-to-end hardware test engineering: building physical prototypes, bringing up hardware, running experiments that stress state-of-the-art products and sensors, and managing data to create actionable insights for the engineering team. This is not QA—it's rigorous test engineering for hardware systems and manufacturing environments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and execute experiments to validate performance of new designs, tracking and analyzing results
- Develop and maintain automated test applications and GUIs for production, hardware validation, and reliability testing
- Prototype and test complex electromechanical systems (sensors, pumps, mechanisms, electronics)
- Build prototypes using 3D printing, machining, and quick-turn tooling with in-house and external suppliers
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering across the product development lifecycle
- Develop test systems using embedded hardware (Arduino) and Python
- Integrate software with physical instrumentation and custom hardware/firmware
- Design operator-friendly UIs for test execution and monitoring (desktop or web-based)
- Architect data visualization and test result reporting systems
- Create documentation and methodologies for team tool adoption
- Design, build, and deploy custom physical test fixtures and jigs for R&D and manufacturing, including sensor and mechanical interface specification
- Perform hands-on root cause analysis and debug of electrical and mechanical failures down to component or PCB level
The role is based in San Francisco (5 days/week) or Boulder/Denver area, with expected travel up to 20%, including potential travel to China for manufacturing support.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of hardware/software test experience with focus on integrated systems
- Track record of shipping high-volume consumer products, including manufacturing support in Asia; willingness and ability to travel to China as needed
- Hands-on prototyping experience with mechanical and electrical systems
- Proficiency with 3D modeling software (Solidworks, ProEngineer, or equivalent)
- Experience using and maintaining basic shop tools (3D printers, band saw, milling machine)
- Proficiency with Python or C#/WPF for test GUIs
- Experience with git, GitHub, command-line scripting tools, Homebrew (macOS), apt (Linux)
- Soldering, wiring, and debugging experience
- Familiarity with hardware communication protocols (I2C, SPI, etc.)
- Understanding of test sequencing, data logging, and hardware automation
- Proven hands-on experience with PCB bring-up, debug, and rework
- BSEE, BSCE, BSCS, or BSME (or equivalent); MS preferred
