Rocket Lab is seeking a Ground Systems Engineer I – Structures and Mechanisms to design, build, test, and commission mechanical launch pad and test sites for the Neutron medium-lift launch vehicle at Wallops Island, Virginia. In this hands-on, collaborative role, you will work closely with suppliers, technicians, and cross-functional teams to deliver world-class ground infrastructure solutions. Your responsibilities will span the full lifecycle from concept through commissioning. Key responsibilities include: - Design of launch pad and test site fixed assets (test stands, launch mounts, gantries) - Design of launch vehicle support equipment (transportation fixtures, lifting apparatuses, breakover fixtures) - Design of large mechanisms (umbilicals, hold downs, strongbacks) - 2D and 3D CAD modeling using NX software - System sizing and analysis via hand calculations and numerical methods - Risk assessments, system hazard analyses, and FMEAs - Component selection and BOM development and maintenance - Supplier and internal team coordination - Failure investigations and root cause analysis - Maintenance program development support - Collaboration with test and operations teams to ensure system functionality - On-site and remote support for installation, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting - Test plan development and execution for launch pad systems and vehicle interfaces - Design and development of test equipment Required qualifications: - ABET-accredited Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent - Strong engineering fundamentals and ability to perform design calculations independently or with guidance - Proficiency in CAD software for 2D and 3D modeling - Ability to read, understand, and produce fabrication drawings Desirable qualifications: - Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering - Work experience in aerospace, oil and gas, mining, or similar heavy industries - Experience with NX and Teamcenter - Experience with analysis software (RISA, ANSYS, GFSSP, AFT, or equivalent) - Prior education, internship, or employment experience in structures or mechanisms design The role involves prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, and computer work, with occasional exposure to moderate noise, dust, and fumes in production areas.
