Impulse Space seeks a Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) Engineer specializing in optical systems to own all aspects of star trackers and optical navigation systems across development and operational phases. You will work within a fast-paced, agile team on high-performance optical systems produced at scale.
Key responsibilities include implementing GNC flight, analysis, and test artifacts; developing robust identification, attitude resolution, and object detection algorithms for star trackers and imaging systems; and supporting relative navigation through imaging systems. You will quantify and verify expected sensor performance using first-principles analysis, simulation, and hardware verification methods.
Additional duties encompass contributing to vehicle-level attitude determination improvements and analyses, participating in software development for both flight code and ground simulation, and creating tools for ground and on-orbit development, alignments, and verification to enable rapid iteration and design decisions. You will resolve technical issues with innovative, resourceful solutions and communicate design needs, intent, and capability to the broader engineering team.
For Senior and higher levels, mentoring other engineers and defining best practices for sensor-level design and integration into space vehicles is expected.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline; 2+ years of experience in image processing and optical analysis; proficiency in MATLAB and C++; demonstrated experience with camera systems and fundamentals of attitude determination; and experience with sensor noise modeling, photometric calibration, or low-light imaging.
