Profound is a fast-growing AI marketing platform used by 15% of the Fortune 500 (Comcast, Estée Lauder, Walmart) and innovators like Ramp, MongoDB, and Figma. The platform consolidates marketing work—research, briefs, content, campaigns, reporting—with AI agents that automate tasks like reporting, content drafting, page audits, and competitive research.
As Global Payroll Manager, you will own end-to-end payroll operations for Profound's core entities in the US, UK, Singapore, and Argentina, with oversight of Employer of Record (EOR) arrangements in Spain and Germany. You will ensure payroll runs accurately and on time while building controls, documentation, and automation to support headcount growth without proportional manual effort increases.
Key responsibilities include:
**Payroll Operations:** Run payroll for all four core jurisdictions, handling new hires, terminations, salary changes, bonuses, commissions, and variable pay. Administer deductions and benefit contributions (401(k), garnishments, pensions), manage contractor payments with proper classification documentation, and serve as the primary point of contact for employee payroll questions while maintaining strict confidentiality.
**Compliance & Tax:** Maintain compliance with local tax, wage-and-hour, social security, pension, and statutory requirements across all jurisdictions. Manage filings (Form 941, year-end reporting), tax authority notices, and payroll tax for mobile and remote employees across US states and countries.
**Vendor & EOR Management:** Manage the EOR partner for Spain and Germany, validating inputs, reviewing outputs and invoices, and coordinating onboarding/offboarding. Own relationships with payroll providers, benefits administrators, and local tax/accounting advisors, holding them to clear service levels.
**Equity & Commissions:** Support equity compensation payroll processes including withholding and reporting on exercises and vesting events in coordination with Legal and Carta. Administer sales commissions and variable pay with Sales Ops to ensure accurate and timely payment.
**Process, Automation & AI:** Build payroll calendars, checklists, SOPs, and internal controls with proper approvals and audit trails. Use AI and workflow automation to eliminate manual work (variance checks, input validation, reconciliations, SOP drafting, routine question triage). Evaluate AI-enabled payroll and HRIS features, recommend adoption based on accuracy/cost/risk, and establish clear rules for human review of AI output and sensitive data protection.
This is an on-site role based in either the NYC or San Francisco office, designed for builders who thrive on speed, iteration, and meaningful impact.
**Requirements:**
- 5 to 8+ years of payroll experience, including multi-country payroll
- Hands-on experience running US payroll across multiple states and managing payroll in more than one country (both are must-haves)
- Experience working with an EOR or PEO to cover countries without a local entity
- Deep knowledge of payroll tax and compliance
- Familiarity with equity compensation mechanics (ISO/NSO, RSUs, withholding, reporting) and cap table tools such as Carta
- Experience with commission and variable pay structures
- Track record partnering cross-functionally with Sales Ops and RevOps teams to administer commissions accurately and on schedule
- Solid accounting fundamentals: journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and ability to close out own work
- Close working partnership with People teams; expertise in HRIS tooling; familiarity with Rippling payroll is a plus
- Practical AI fluency: demonstrated use of AI assistants or automation tools to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy
- Sound judgment on data privacy and security when handling sensitive employee information, including with AI tools
- Exceptional attention to detail with judgment to know when to escalate
- Excellent communicator across time zones who can explain payroll clearly to non-experts
- Thrives in ambiguity with a 0-to-1 mindset; energized by building structure, processes, and tools from scratch
- Preferred: experience at a high-growth startup, standing up payroll in a new country, supporting payroll and equity audits, or cross-border mobility and shadow payroll. Singapore- or Argentina-specific experience is a plus but not required.
