GitLab is seeking a Fullstack Engineer to build the Duo Client SDK, a shared TypeScript foundation for every GitLab Duo client. You'll work across frontend and backend systems, designing the SDK's Node.js core and public API while building the clients that consume it.
In this role, you'll develop secure, well-tested, performant TypeScript features that solve technical problems of moderate scope. You'll ship small features and improvements with minimal guidance, write tests with every merge request, and contribute to code reviews and design discussions. Key responsibilities include extracting and publishing TypeScript packages from the GitLab Language Server, designing durable public APIs with clear interfaces and semantic versioning, and building isomorphic core packages that isolate platform-specific behavior.
You'll also build and improve SDK client surfaces, including Vue 3 components in Duo Chat on the web, in collaboration with product, design, and engineering teams. Additional focus areas include strengthening credential handling across hosts (bearer tokens, session cookies, CSRF protection), optimizing bundle size and startup cost for browser consumers, and supporting a Tier 2 on-call rotation for urgent issues.
You'll work alongside senior and staff engineers who will help with design decisions. The role rewards care about interfaces, versioning, and backward compatibility because other engineers will depend on what you build.
Required skills: strong TypeScript proficiency across frontend and backend (including Node.js services), experience with modern build tools (monorepos, ESM, dependency management), Vue 3 and Composition API experience or comparable frontend background, API design experience, understanding of Node.js vs. browser execution differences, security-minded development practices, and clear technical communication. You should be self-motivated, well-organized, and thrive in a fully remote environment.
