Salary: USD 140,000 - 260,000 / annual
Substack is seeking a Full Stack Software Engineer to join the Activation team, responsible for building features that drive reader discovery and creator success on the platform. You'll develop features that help writers monetize their work, design and run experiments to improve sign-up conversion and retention metrics across different user acquisition surfaces (organic search, App Store, creator-shared links, paid campaigns), and build tools to help new creators find audiences and establish publishing habits.
You'll work across the full stack using TypeScript (Node/Express and React) with Postgres, collaborating closely with designers, product managers, writers, and support staff from concept through deployment. The role emphasizes ownership and autonomy—you'll be expected to own your work end-to-end and operate independently within a lean organization. You'll hold yourself and the team to high standards for production systems while prioritizing elegant, delightful product experiences that get out of the way so creators can focus on their work.
The ideal candidate has 3+ years of software engineering experience and thrives in a collaborative environment with diverse thinkers. Experience at fast-growing startups or high-performing growth teams is a plus but not required. You should take pride in building products that align with Substack's mission: creating a better economic model for independent creators and writers.
