Salary: USD 140,000 - 260,000 / annual
Substack is building an economic platform for independent creators, enabling direct subscriptions and creative autonomy outside traditional media gatekeeping. The Sponsorships team is expanding this model by connecting brands with creators through paid sponsorship opportunities while maintaining platform trust and user experience.
You will own full-stack development across frontend, backend, and occasionally mobile features that help creators monetize sponsorship opportunities. You'll collaborate closely with designers, writers, support staff, and leadership to move from product concept through research, implementation, and deployment. The team values generalists who can work across the entire tech stack, prototype quickly, and think deeply about product impact.
The tech stack centers on TypeScript (Node/Express backend, React frontend) and Postgres. You'll operate with significant autonomy in a small, high-performing team where every engineer contributes to product direction and strategy. You may work directly with sponsorship partners like Polymarket to develop new experiences.
Substack's mission is to build a better business model for writing and independent expression, unmoored from advertising-driven incentives.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 5+ years of software engineering experience
- Independent and autonomous; capable of owning work end-to-end and leading without micromanagement
- High standards for production systems and code quality
- Strong product sensibility; ability to build elegant, delightful experiences that stay out of the user's way
- Collaborative mindset; comfortable working with diverse thinkers and bringing unique perspective
- Belief in Substack's mission to enable independent expression
- Experience with ML technology is beneficial
- Prior experience at a fast-growing startup or high-performing growth team is a plus (not required)
