Substack is seeking a Full Stack Software Engineer to join its Community team, which is building the next generation of products and features to help creators connect and manage their communities. This includes direct messaging, Substack Chat, and entirely new community-focused products. You will build frontend and backend features (and occasionally mobile) that empower creators to manage their communities and help users connect more deeply within those communities. You'll collaborate closely with designers, writers, support staff, and others throughout the product lifecycle—from concept and research through implementation and deployment. The team values autonomy and product-mindedness, expecting each engineer to own their work end-to-end. The Community team is small and composed of generalists who brainstorm directly with CEO Chris Best. Your ideas for new products and UI/UX improvements can become internal prototypes and ship to millions of users. You'll work primarily with TypeScript (Node/Express and React) and Postgres. Experience with these technologies is helpful but not required; the team is willing to help you learn. You should have at least 7+ years of software engineering experience and a track record of working independently on production systems. You take pride in building elegant, delightful product experiences that get out of the way so creators can focus on their work. Experience with ML technology is a plus. You believe in Substack's mission to build a better economic model for independent creators and are excited by the opportunity to work on a platform that prioritizes creator autonomy and direct audience connections over advertising-driven models.
