OpenAI's ChatGPT Space team is building a shared workspace where people and AI agents collaborate to turn ideas into polished, editable work. Space integrates teammates, ChatGPT, and shared knowledge around projects, with creation experiences spanning Pages, Sheets, Slides, and new artifact types. The team prioritizes rapid shipping, learning from real usage, and maintaining high standards for craft, correctness, and speed.
As a Frontend Software Engineer, you will build a top-tier collaboration experience that shapes how people work with AI. This is a craft-heavy role requiring close partnership with design to prototype, iterate, and polish new interaction models, then translate them into reliable, high-performance product experiences.
You will help define what great collaboration looks like between people and agents: how shared context is represented, how contributions and changes are made understandable, and how users stay oriented and in control as work moves between teammates and AI.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build and ship polished, high-performance UI for Space and its collaborative workflows
- Partner tightly with design to turn prototypes into production-quality experiences, from layout and typography to motion and interaction details
- Develop intuitive interfaces for creating and editing shared content, organizing project context, and reviewing contributions from teammates and AI
- Own frontend architecture decisions across component systems, state management, navigation, and rendering performance
- Improve quality and reliability through testing, instrumentation, accessibility, and thoughtful UX for loading, errors, and concurrent changes
- Collaborate with research, platform, and backend partners to bring model capabilities into cohesive creation, editing, and collaboration experiences
Requirements:
- Strong experience with modern frontend stacks such as React and TypeScript, with a high bar for UI craft
- Demonstrated ability in design engineering: sweating the details while maintaining velocity
- Track record building rich, interactive product experiences with deep care for performance, responsiveness, and usability
- Comfort exploring ambiguous problems and iterating rapidly with design and product teams
- End-to-end workflow thinking with ability to make complex interactions feel clear and intuitive
- Experience with collaborative applications, rich-text editors, real-time interfaces, or AI-powered products (nice-to-have)
