Clutch is Canada's largest online used car retailer on a mission to reinvent how people buy, sell, and own cars. The company has achieved significant growth, earning recognition on the Globe & Mail's Top Growing Companies list five years running and spots on Deloitte's Technology Fast 50 and Fast 500 lists. Backed by world-class investors including D1 Capital and Canaan, Clutch operates across multiple Canadian provinces and continues to scale rapidly.
This is a founding Staff Platform Engineer role—the first dedicated platform engineering hire—with the opportunity to define and build platform engineering from the ground up at Clutch. Rather than maintaining infrastructure, you'll architect the internal developer platform that enables every engineer to move faster, ship safer, and operate at scale.
You'll partner closely with engineering leadership to define platform strategy, establish engineering standards, and build self-service tooling, infrastructure, and developer workflows. Your scope spans CI/CD and cloud infrastructure to developer experience, observability, and internal tooling. You'll own the technical direction of the platform with autonomy to build it the right way, thinking in systems rather than individual services and creating leverage for dozens of engineers.
Key responsibilities include defining and executing Clutch's Platform Engineering strategy; building and evolving the Internal Developer Platform for improved productivity; owning CI/CD platform architecture and deployment workflows; designing and scaling AWS cloud infrastructure with Terraform and GitHub Actions; improving developer velocity through automation and tooling; and defining platform standards and reusable patterns that enhance reliability, observability, security, and operational excellence.
You bring 8+ years of experience building cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, DevOps, or developer tooling at scale. You've operated as a Staff Engineer, Technical Lead, or senior individual contributor driving technical strategy across multiple teams. Deep expertise with AWS, Terraform, Docker, and modern CI/CD platforms is essential, along with a strong software engineering mindset and experience building tooling in Python, Go, JavaScript, or similar languages. You've designed scalable developer platforms, deployment systems, or engineering enablement tooling, and you excel at identifying organization-wide technical problems and building long-term solutions. Excellent written communication and documentation skills, with the ability to influence engineers and technical leadership, are critical. You're comfortable in fast-moving startup environments with significant ownership and ambiguity.
Nice-to-have skills include experience with feature flagging platforms, monorepo tooling, and designing Internal Developer Platforms.
The role is permanent, full-time, and hybrid with three days per week in downtown Toronto. Compensation starts at $200,000+ per annum with comprehensive benefits including healthcare, dental, vision, prescriptions, life insurance, and dependent coverage from day one.
