Porters is building the operating system for autonomous banking. The company uses AI agents to automate critical, regulated banking processes—reading letters, re-keying data, chasing missing information—work that is too important to get wrong and too tedious for humans. Founded just over a year ago, Porters is already live with real customers, growing rapidly, and was named Fintech of the Year 2026. Backed by Earlybird and Seedcamp (early investors in Revolut, Wise, and UiPath), the company is scaling from Berlin and Barcelona.
As Founding Engineer (Tech Lead), you will own high-impact technical outcomes and lead the engineering team through rapid growth. You'll take ambiguous business problems and translate them into clear requirements, designs with business rationale, sequenced work, and realistic estimates. You'll personally engineer the hardest, most complex components—from cross-service logic to the boundary where AI outputs become deterministic, auditable actions—while multiplying the effectiveness of mid-level engineers through well-defined work, clear architecture, and rigorous code review.
Key responsibilities include: delivering the highest-risk work yourself as an IC; turning business goals into shipped projects by owning problems end-to-end; designing complex systems that scale and remain maintainable; setting decision thresholds so engineers self-serve low-stakes calls; and ensuring customer outcomes drive success.
You'll work with a modern stack: Python 3.14, FastAPI, Pydantic, SQLAlchemy 2.0 in strict four-layer architecture; AWS (Bedrock for AI, ECS Fargate, Aurora MySQL, S3, Lambda); React frontend; and heavy use of agentic IDEs. The role is in-person in Berlin or Barcelona, or remote within Europe.
You bring 8+ years of professional software engineering, with a track record of shipping in fast-paced, ambiguous environments. Regulated industry and/or VC-backed startup experience is a plus. You are a hands-on builder with deep Python proficiency, strong REST API design, relational data modeling, and service-oriented architecture skills. Real experience building LLM/agentic tooling is essential. You think naturally in business outcomes, work packages, ROI, and extensibility. You lift people through design review, coaching, and clear direction.
