Pareto.AI builds infrastructure that converts expert human judgment into data, evaluations, and reinforcement learning environments for frontier AI models. The company partners with leading AI labs like Anthropic to scale human-data infrastructure already in production. As a Forward Deployed Software Engineer, you will partner directly with frontier labs and own end-to-end responsibility for the RL environments they train on. This is a full-stack role spanning scoping, environment design, implementation, grading systems, production deployment, and ongoing reliability. Key responsibilities include: - Leverage innovative problem-solving and engineering expertise to address critical AI challenges for clients - Build and ship RL environments: layered container images, MCP tool servers for agent interaction, task setup, and deterministic or agent-judge graders—released reproducibly into customer platforms - Own production systems: investigate failed runs, lead response when delivery pipelines degrade, stabilize issues first and root-cause second, write runbooks, and implement fixes to prevent recurrence - Invest in platform infrastructure: automated image builds, release notes, spec-first design, CI gates, and review harnesses to reduce the cost of future environments - Partner across delivery, product, engineering, and ML teams to influence product roadmap and drive business objectives Ideal candidates bring a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field. Strong programming skills in Python, TypeScript, or functional languages are essential. Familiarity with AWS and fluent, high-leverage use of coding agents (with sound judgment in reviewing agent output) are expected. You should demonstrate outstanding communication, analytical troubleshooting, and strong ethics. Willingness to travel to customer locations (primarily California) when required is necessary, as is legal right to travel to the US.
