Coinbase's Legal organization is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer to embed within the Office of the CTO and serve as a founding engineer within Legal. This role bridges Legal stakeholders and engineering teams, focusing on identifying high-value workflow automation opportunities and rapidly prototyping AI-driven solutions using Coinbase's existing AI platform.
You will embed directly with Legal leadership to surface automation opportunities with the greatest business leverage, developing deep understanding of workflows including contract review, regulatory filing drafts, and subsidiary governance. You'll prototype quickly and pragmatically, using Coinbase's AI platform as the default foundation before recommending new builds. You'll own the Legal automation roadmap in partnership with the VP of Legal and CCO, translating complex legal workflows—entity management, litigation tracking, product counsel reviews, compliance reporting—into clear engineering requirements and constraints.
Key responsibilities include defining the build-vs-buy strategy for Legal tooling, evaluating what should be built internally, adopted from partner teams, procured from vendors, or retired. You'll ensure every automated legal output is traceable, reviewable, and defensible, with privilege boundaries, auditability, and human-in-the-loop controls as first-class design concerns. You'll drive adoption through brown-bags, prototype walkthroughs, and feedback loops that bring Legal teams along the journey.
Required experience includes 5+ years of software engineering with demonstrated ability to ship production systems in ambiguous, stakeholder-heavy environments. You need hands-on experience deploying LLM-based applications, including prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, hallucination guardrails, and human-in-the-loop design for high-stakes outputs. You should have proven ability to embed with non-technical domain experts, rapidly internalize complex workflows, and translate them into engineering requirements. Familiarity with legal and compliance systems concepts (contract lifecycle management, regulatory filing workflows, entity governance, privilege-sensitive data handling) is required but you don't need to be an attorney. Experience with multi-agent orchestration, forward deployed engineering, or embedded technical advisory roles—ideally in legal-tech, compliance-tech, or RegTech—is strongly preferred.
