Thought Machine is building modern cloud-native banking technology to replace legacy systems at financial institutions worldwide. The company has raised over £500m from top-tier investors including JPMorgan Chase, Standard Chartered, and Temasek, and operates offices across London, New York, Singapore, Sydney, and Lisbon with a team of 550+.
As a Forward Deployed Engineer - Infrastructure, you will be Thought Machine's primary technical interface with banking clients, embedding directly within their engineering teams to design, build, and deliver production-ready implementations of Vault (the company's core banking platform) and associated products. This is a hands-on role that spans the entire project lifecycle from presales through production at scale.
You will own infrastructure consulting engagements, working with clients to design and prepare cloud infrastructure for Vault deployments, including planning for high availability, disaster recovery, backup, redundancy, capacity, and security. You'll deploy and configure Vault on client, SaaS, and internal cloud infrastructure; develop deep expertise in optimizing cloud infrastructure for Vault implementations; and support troubleshooting both remotely and on-site. You'll also promote and deploy monitoring, logging, and alerting tools, work closely with internal product and engineering teams to incorporate client feedback, and support the commercial team during presales cycles.
Expect to travel to client sites up to 25% of the time and work autonomously in complex environments, acting as the connective tissue between Thought Machine's product engineering and client delivery teams.
REQUIREMENTS
Essential:
- Ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Hands-on experience with some or all of: Linux/Unix administration (Ubuntu, Debian), Kafka, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, Istio
- Experience with automation/configuration management tools (Terraform, Puppet, Chef, Ansible)
- Experience with AWS or GCP
Desirable:
- Experience with at least two cloud platforms and certifications for at least one (AWS Solutions Architect Professional, GCP Professional Cloud Architect, or Azure Solutions Architect Expert)
- Experience with enterprise secrets management systems (HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager)
- Background supporting production systems for high-profile, mission-critical systems, ideally at tier-1 financial institutions
- Experience with hybrid cloud technologies (OpenShift, Google Anthos, AWS EKS Anywhere, AWS Outposts)
- Strong background in Go, Python, or Java
- Experience with CockroachDB, AlloyDB, or Aurora
- Experience with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana)
