Notion is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer to join the India team and help deliver complex, production-grade data migrations, integrations, and automations for customers across APAC. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will partner closely with regional Forward Deployed Engineers who own customer discovery and solution architecture, while you own the technical execution layer.
You will be responsible for the complete technical delivery lifecycle: feasibility assessment, implementation planning, design, development, testing, production rollout, validation, reconciliation, and operational handoff. You'll work across multiple customer environments and source systems, often with incomplete requirements and real-world constraints. Success requires strong engineering fundamentals, sound judgment, careful validation, and the ability to turn one-off delivery work into reusable tools and repeatable playbooks.
As a founding engineer in India, you will help build a new regional engineering capability from the ground up. You will create migration infrastructure, standards, and reusable tooling used by Forward Deployed Engineers across APAC, while establishing practices that can scale globally. The role offers an opportunity to become a technical authority for production migration delivery, shaping how Notion approaches reliability, validation, and operational quality across complex customer environments.
Key responsibilities include: owning technical execution after requirements and architecture are established; applying a repeatable migration lifecycle covering inventory, compatibility assessment, transformation design, testing, cutover, reconciliation, and handoff; translating requirements into technical designs and implementation plans; building production-quality migration utilities, backend services, data pipelines, and integrations using Python, SQL, APIs, and cloud infrastructure; investigating source-system behavior and data quality issues; designing and validating permissions and ownership mappings; ensuring migrations are reliable, secure, observable, and idempotent; executing migrations only through approved environments and following least-privilege access; building validation and reconciliation frameworks; debugging failures across application code, infrastructure, and third-party systems; managing multiple workstreams and dependencies; surfacing scope changes and risks early; maintaining auditable records of decisions and approvals; converting repeated patterns into reusable components; and bringing field learnings back to Product and Engineering teams.
In your first 90 days, you will learn Notion's migration ecosystem and APAC delivery model, establish a productive working rhythm with regional partners, contribute to at least one migration through production delivery, and leave behind clear documentation and runbooks. Within six months, you will independently own production workstreams, deliver measurable improvements in turnaround time and quality, help establish quality controls and observability patterns, and turn repeated delivery patterns into reusable tools adopted by subsequent engagements.
The role is based in Hyderabad with hybrid work on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (Anchor Days).
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3 to 6 years of hands-on experience in backend engineering, data engineering, integration engineering, implementation engineering, technical consulting, solutions engineering, or similar technical role
- Strong hands-on Python development experience
- Working experience with Node.js, JavaScript, or TypeScript
- Strong SQL skills and solid understanding of relational databases, data modeling, and data transformation
- Experience with REST APIs, JSON, authentication, webhooks, and system integrations
- Experience owning a production migration, integration, or technical implementation through mapping, transformation, testing, rollout, validation, and handoff
- Experience taking a technical problem from requirements and design through development, testing, deployment, and production operation
- Experience with Git, code review, automated testing, release practices, and production deployment
- Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills across code, data, infrastructure, and external systems
- Evidence of working on production systems, not only prototypes or proof-of-concept projects
- Clear written and verbal English communication with ability to explain technical decisions, constraints, and risks to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- High agency and ownership; comfortable making progress with incomplete information, challenging assumptions, and escalating with options and recommendations
NICE TO HAVES:
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, job orchestration, or infrastructure automation
- Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure
- Familiarity with message queues, event-driven systems, distributed-system patterns, retries, concurrency, and rate limits
- Experience with monitoring, logging, alerting, or observability tools
- Experience with enterprise SaaS applications, professional services, or large-scale customer implementations
- Experience migrating large volumes of content or structured data between enterprise platforms
- Experience with AI or LLM applications, retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation frameworks, or agentic workflows
- Familiarity with MCP, tool calling, Notion Workers, Custom Agents, or similar extensibility platforms
- Experience working with distributed global or APAC teams
