OpenAI's Forward Deployed Engineering team is hiring a senior engineer to build and deploy AI systems for legal work. You will embed deeply with law firms and legal teams to understand their workflows, identify high-value opportunities, and select the right initial use cases to prove value with OpenAI's models.
You will own the technical work end-to-end: from discovery and proof of concept through production adoption. Early engagements will focus on creating "hero" workflows that demonstrate how OpenAI's models can support legal analysis, drafting, research, and real-time work with complex case records. You'll translate customer workflows and constraints into clear product feedback, and as the motion matures, turn successful deployments into repeatable patterns that scale across larger accounts and the broader legal market.
Key responsibilities include embedding with customer teams to understand needs and guide adoption; building full-stack systems that deliver measurable value; making trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality while protecting delivery; contributing directly to code when needed; codifying working patterns into tools and playbooks; and sharing field feedback to help Research and Product teams understand where models succeed and where they can improve.
You should bring 5+ years of software engineering, ML engineering, or technical deployment experience with customer-facing ownership, ideally in financial services or adjacent regulated industries. Experience with legal technology, compliance-heavy workflows, or professional services is helpful but not required. You must have owned complex AI or data-driven systems end-to-end in environments where errors carry real financial or regulatory consequences. You should write production-grade code across backend and frontend systems using Python, JavaScript, or comparable stacks, and have deployed systems powered by LLMs or generative models. Strong communication across engineering, product, risk, compliance, and executive stakeholders is essential. The role requires systems thinking, high execution standards, and the ability to stay calm and decisive when delivery is urgent, ambiguous, and high-stakes.
The role is based in San Francisco or New York City with a hybrid work model of three days in the office per week. Travel up to 50% may be required. Relocation assistance is offered.
