OpenAI's Forward Deployed Engineering team is hiring a Senior Forward Deployed Engineer to own end-to-end deployments of AI systems within healthcare organizations, including payers, providers, health systems, and healthcare technology companies.
You will lead technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, productionization, and handoff, translating complex customer workflows, data, infrastructure, and regulatory constraints into production AI systems. Success is measured through production adoption, measurable workflow impact, and evaluation loops that establish customer-specific benchmarks and acceptance criteria.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own the complete technical solution from customer discovery through architecture, hands-on implementation, evaluation, production deployment, adoption, and handoff
- Partner with customer engineers, operators, and domain experts to frame ambiguous problems and translate payer, provider, or health-system workflows into technical requirements
- Design and implement production AI applications and agentic systems that integrate with customer infrastructure, enterprise APIs, data platforms, electronic health records, claims systems, and operational tools
- Build with appropriate safeguards for protected health information (PHI), HIPAA compliance, privacy, security, authorization, governance, and auditability
- Define and operationalize evaluations, validation evidence, human-review workflows, escalation paths, and launch criteria
- Use evaluation results, error analysis, observability, and customer feedback to improve system reliability and production readiness
- Distill deployment learnings into reference architectures, integration patterns, evaluation harnesses, and reusable technical primitives for regulated enterprise environments
Ideal candidates bring 6+ years of software engineering, ML/AI engineering, solutions engineering, or technical consulting experience. You should have operated as a senior engineer or tech lead trusted to make technical decisions in ambiguous environments, with hands-on ownership of complex customer-facing or enterprise systems. Healthcare experience is valuable, including familiarity with payer workflows, provider operations, EHR systems (Epic, Oracle Health/Cerner, MEDITECH), and interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR). Prior experience as a forward deployed engineer, customer engineer, solutions architect for regulated enterprises, or technical founder is preferred.
The role is based in New York City with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. Travel up to 50% is required. Relocation assistance is offered.
