Thought Machine is building modern cloud-native banking technology to replace legacy systems at financial institutions worldwide. As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will be the primary technical interface between Thought Machine and client engineering teams, embedding directly on-site and remotely to design, build, and deliver production-ready implementations of Vault and associated banking products.
This is a hands-on, generalist engineering role spanning backend development, systems integration, infrastructure, and technical consulting. You will own the technical success of assigned client engagements across the full project lifecycle—from initial requirements and design through production deployment and optimization. You'll travel to client sites up to 25% of the time, work autonomously in complex environments, and serve as the connective tissue between Thought Machine's product engineering teams and client delivery teams.
Key responsibilities include embedding with client engineering teams to translate business requirements into technical delivery plans; writing production-quality code (primarily Python or Go) to build integrations, tooling, and data pipelines; debugging and resolving complex issues across distributed systems including databases, messaging, container orchestration, and cloud infrastructure; designing scalable solutions covering high availability, disaster recovery, and security; supporting presales with technical deep-dives and proof-of-concept implementations; and channeling client feedback and pain points back to product teams to drive improvements.
You must have 3+ years of hands-on engineering experience with strong proficiency in Python or Go, working knowledge of Linux/Unix, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL-equivalent databases, and Kafka-equivalent messaging systems, and practical production experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure. Client-facing delivery experience is essential—you should be comfortable explaining complex systems to both technical and non-technical stakeholders and owning outcomes end-to-end. Banking or financial services experience is desirable but not required. The role offers competitive salary, comprehensive healthcare, 25 days holiday, unlimited paid sick time, 401K matching up to 7%, share options, and flexible benefits.
