August is building an autonomous organization of AI agents that enable law firms to scale their knowledge work. The company partners directly with elite law firms, sharing revenue on agent deployments and equity in transformed firms. August targets the $1T legal services market by embedding AI agents into every step of a lawyer's workflow—from matter intake through completion.
As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will embed with partner law firms to architect, build, and deploy production-grade AI agents that perform legal work with expert-level reasoning. This is a zero-to-one role that combines deep technical work with direct client partnership.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own end-to-end deployments: scope integrations, write production code, execute cutover, and maintain stability on live matters
- Build integrations across the legal tech stack: iManage, NetDocs, SharePoint, Outlook, Word add-ins, and custom APIs
- Work directly with lawyers to understand actual matter workflows before automating any process
- Extract patterns from each deployment and harden them into reusable platform modules, SDKs, and internal tooling
- Debug production issues under pressure, root-cause failures, and instrument systems to prevent recurrence
You should have 1–2 years of production software engineering experience as a strong generalist. Required skills: TypeScript/JavaScript (React/Next.js) and at least one backend language (Python preferred). You're comfortable writing API clients, data transformation scripts, and lightweight services. You favor shipping the smallest working solution, add observability from day one, and thrive in high-ownership, fast-moving environments with ambiguity. You can context-switch between deep technical problems and high-level architecture, and take pride in building things that work in the wild.
