Salary: USD 160,000 - 220,000 / annual
Via is launching AI Labs, an incubator-style team within the company focused on building cutting-edge AI-powered solutions for public transportation and urban mobility. As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you'll be a founding member of this new team, operating with startup-like autonomy while backed by Via's established scale and resources.
You will own the full lifecycle of AI product development—from problem framing and data pipeline design through production deployment and live iteration. Working in a forward-deployed capacity, you'll collaborate directly with city partners to understand their challenges and rapidly prototype agentic solutions that address real-world constraints. You'll lead technical scoping workshops with city leaders, translating complex local problems into scalable AI workflows.
Your technical scope spans the entire stack: backend and frontend development, API design, data infrastructure, LLM integration, predictive modeling, and real-time decision systems. You'll write clean, maintainable code that powers AI-driven features and scales reliably in production. Beyond individual contributions, you'll help establish the technical culture of AI Labs from the ground up—shaping how the team builds, reviews, ships, and iterates.
You'll work cross-functionally with product, data science, and operations teams to identify high-impact AI opportunities across Via's business. The role requires comfort with ambiguity, ownership mentality, strong communication skills, and intellectual curiosity about emerging AI tools and approaches. Travel to collaborate on-site with customers is expected.
Required: 5+ years building full-stack applications with end-to-end ownership, 3+ years working with AI tools or building AI products, deep expertise across the AI stack (LLMs, predictive modeling, data infrastructure), strong backend engineering fundamentals, and comfort thriving in early-stage environments.
