Abacus Insights is a healthcare data and AI platform for payers, backed by $100M in funding. The company helps health plans break down data silos to create governed, analytics-ready data foundations that power better decisions on outcomes, cost, and member/provider experience.
You will be a Forward Deployed Data Engineer—a hands-on technical expert embedded on client-facing delivery teams. You will work on-site with health plan clients to design and build data models, ETL/ELT pipelines, and integrations that transform fragmented payer data into governed, analytics-ready foundations, typically on Snowflake.
Your responsibilities include:
- Design and implement data models, ETL/ELT pipelines, and integrations for payer data ingestion, standardization, and analytics readiness
- Translate business requirements into scalable technical designs across the full data lifecycle
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor to client data, IT, and business stakeholders, including senior leaders
- Lead discovery sessions and workshops to gather requirements and structure open-ended problems
- Communicate technical tradeoffs, risks, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Work with core payer datasets: claims, eligibility, member, provider, encounter, and care management data
- Navigate healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7, EDI, APIs)
- Partner closely with healthcare subject matter experts, AI/product engineers, and core delivery teams
- Preserve and apply Abacus data-modeling standards across engagements
- Capture reusable patterns, accelerators, and lessons learned to support scaling new service offerings
This role sits at the intersection of senior data engineering, client consulting, and payer data expertise. You will step into ambiguous situations—unfamiliar systems, incomplete documentation, competing priorities—and bring structure, technical judgment, and healthcare fluency to move forward.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, solution engineering, or related technical role
- Strong expertise in data modeling, ETL/ELT, integration, databases, data pipelines, and analytics solution design
- Proficiency in SQL, Snowflake, Databricks, Spark, cloud data services, APIs, and integration frameworks; hands-on Snowflake experience strongly preferred
- Experience with healthcare payer, government, claims, eligibility, member, provider, encounter, and care management data
- Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards and exchange patterns (FHIR, HL7, EDI, APIs)
- Proven ability to work directly with external clients, senior stakeholders, and ambiguous requirements
- Strong facilitation, requirements-gathering, communication, and structured problem-solving skills
- T-shaped professional with deep technical expertise, broad systems understanding, and sound business judgment
- Self-starter with strong analytical instincts, pragmatic problem solving, and ability to work on-site with clients as needed
Nice-to-have:
- Experience in consulting, professional services, or other client-facing delivery environment
- Snowflake or Databricks certifications
- Experience with data governance, master data management, or data quality frameworks
- Familiarity with CMS, Medicaid, or Medicare data requirements
