The Test and Evaluation Team performs validation of Group 5 unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in close coordination with specialist teams across Guidance, Navigation, Control, Flight Sciences, Mission Systems, and Aircraft Maintenance.
As a Flight Test Instrumentation (FTI) Engineer, you will tackle complex challenges in high-stakes defense technology, driving innovation in autonomous systems deployed at unprecedented speed. You will leverage instrumentation and RF telemetry expertise in an environment that encourages bold ideas and provides resources to execute them.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct requirements decomposition using digital tools to select and install necessary flight test instrumentation; communicate analytical insights to stakeholders
- Collaborate cross-functionally with discipline engineers, customers, COMSEC, and program management to inform test safety, flight safety, and strategic decisions
- Lead technical investigations to diagnose instrumentation and RF telemetry issues, interpret data, and formulate solutions to improve system reliability
- Design and implement analytics-driven customer-facing products showcasing system performance metrics and trend analysis
- Design, fabricate, and install flight test instrumentation sensors, data paths, and equipment into experimental aircraft using novel approaches; fabricate wire harnesses and route through aircraft structure
- Perform test instrument calibrations and pre-flight checks as an approving signatory for GO/NO-GO flight test decisions
- Operate and maintain telemetry auto-tracking ground systems using COTS software and hardware
- Travel to high desert locations in California, Nevada, Texas, and Oregon up to 50% of the time to establish FTI and RF telemetry solutions
Core Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics Engineering, or related field; alternatively, Radar Systems or Data Science experience with strong quantitative and mechanical measurements foundation
- 5+ years of notable experience with embedded data acquisition systems in manned or unmanned aircraft
- Exceptional data visualization skills with proficiency in analytical tools (IADS, MATLAB, LabVIEW, Simulink)
- Demonstrated expertise implementing high channel count (100-400 measurands) mechanical measurement systems and architecting RF telemetry for near real-time control room display
- Proven track record implementing and troubleshooting grounding, bonding, and shielding solutions for analog-to-digital instrumentation signals in multi-band RF environments
- Experience with composite and exotic material installations across varying flight test environments
- Strong commitment to applying data science to solve real-world problems; ability to translate technical findings into actionable recommendations
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to work extended hours as required
- Ability to travel as required for test planning and execution
