Helsing is a defence AI company on a mission to protect democracies through technological leadership. We are seeking an experienced Firmware Engineer to join our Barcelona office and take ownership of firmware development for advanced robotics systems. In this individual contributor role, you will be the primary owner of firmware across our robotics platforms, operating at the boundary between hardware and software. You will design, implement, and maintain embedded firmware for real-time systems including control, sensing, and system monitoring. Your responsibilities span the full firmware lifecycle: architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and long-term maintenance. Day-to-day, you will debug complex system-level issues that may span software, firmware, hardware, or component behavior using tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and digital multimeters. You will act as the technical bridge between hardware and software teams, collaborating closely with electrical engineers, controls engineers, motion planning specialists, and systems engineers. You will advise leadership on firmware-related technical decisions and drive technical decision-making through hands-on, technically deep work. Ownership areas include control systems (power stages and motor control), embedded communications, system health monitoring/logging, and hardware bring-up. The tech stack includes TI C28x MCUs, C/C++, Linux host OS, NodeJS/TypeScript, Docker, GitHub Actions/CI-CD, and protocols such as CANOpenFD, BiSSC, SSI, UART, and I2C. You should have at least 5 years of experience developing embedded firmware for real-time systems, with a BSc in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent (MSc preferred). You must be proficient in C/C++ for embedded targets with strong knowledge of MCU internals, peripherals, and real-time constraints. Comfort with hardware debugging tools and schematic reading is essential. You should be able to work fully independently, owning firmware from concept to validation. Fluency in both English and Spanish is required.
