Anthropic is seeking a Financial Data and Controls Lead to join the Billing Platform team. The Billing Platform builds the systems customers use to transact with Anthropic, including subscriptions, usage billing, quote-to-cash, invoicing, and payments. You will be the dedicated owner of billing accuracy, reconciliation, and financial controls across these systems, ensuring the right checks run, controls are in place, and audit evidence exists.
Billing systems and pricing change frequently, and each flow must meet SOX requirements. Accurate billing enables rapid product and pricing launches while maintaining timely month-end closes. Current challenges include validating negotiated pricing from contract to invoice, handling various credit forms, app store billing, and keeping controls current as underlying systems are replaced.
This is a foundational role and the first hire of its kind on the team. You will lead a working group of reconciliation and controls owners from each billing engineering team, setting the approach they follow. You will work closely with Finance Systems, Accounting, Internal Audit, and Data Engineering. The role sits in Engineering and works with Finance daily, partnering with the Data organization on pipelines and warehouse infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include: owning reconciliation and accuracy checks for critical billing data across product platforms, third-party providers, app stores, and cloud marketplaces; designing and running detective controls to catch billing errors before they reach accounting books; partnering with billing engineering teams to automate verifiers; reviewing billing changes with financial impact and SOX implications; making SOX review a lightweight, standard step in billing change releases; owning end-to-end test strategy and audit evidence; triaging billing errors and tracking materiality; defining and maintaining data contracts between billing and finance systems; leading the reconciliation and controls working group through influence; and acting as the Billing owner alongside Accounting and Finance Systems to translate product and pricing roadmaps into financial impact and process updates.
You will need strong accounting domain knowledge to talk to engineers about systems and to Finance and auditors about risk and materiality. The role requires bridging technical and financial perspectives across multiple teams without direct authority.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience building or owning a financial ledger, billing reconciliation, or cash reconciliation system end-to-end that Accounting relied on to close the books
- Hands-on SQL skills strong enough to take two messy datasets (e.g., usage events and invoices), match them, find breaks, and explain root causes
- Accounting domain knowledge (order-to-cash, month-end close, materiality) sufficient to identify which billing changes have financial impact
- Experience working with SOX and Internal Audit teams on IT application controls, detective controls, transaction monitoring, functional test evidence, and auditor walkthroughs
- Experience defining data contracts between billing or product systems and finance systems (ERP, general ledger, revenue recognition)
- Track record of driving work across Engineering, Finance, Accounting, and Audit without direct authority
- Ability to explain technical issues to Finance and auditors in their terms, and financial risk to engineers in theirs
- Interest in AI and commitment to Anthropic's mission of building safe, beneficial AI systems
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Background as a backend, data, or analytics engineer who built a financial ledger or cash reconciliation system from scratch
- Experience running these systems under public company reporting requirements and scaling as the company grew
- Experience with usage-based or consumption billing
- Experience with multi-party billing (marketplaces, app stores)
- Experience turning manual checks into automated verifiers with engineering teams
- Experience remediating a control deficiency or standing up a controls program while underlying systems were changing
- Track record of using Claude or other AI tools to automate reconciliation, testing, or evidence collection with checks that hold up to review
- Experience with billing and finance tools (Stripe, Metronome, Zuora, NetSuite, Workday Financials)
- Python for data analysis or automation
