Workstream is a Series B, venture-backed HR, payroll, and hiring platform serving the 2.7 billion hourly workforce globally. The company has built a robotics and data-collection division that partners with leading AI companies to produce large-scale egocentric video datasets for training advanced AI models.
You will join the Robotics Data Collections team as a Field Software Engineer responsible for keeping the capture operation running smoothly. Your users are the operators and contributors recording footage daily at capture sites; when systems break, their hours, pay, and patience are on the line. You will see these users face-to-face, hear them in support channels, and build with their needs in mind.
The role spans multiple surfaces: a desktop app (Electron) that site staff use to offload and upload footage, a mobile app (React Native) that contributors record with, web dashboards and reports (React/TypeScript), Python services, and physical capture devices. You will build features on some surfaces and debug across all of them.
Your responsibilities break down as follows:
**Product Engineering (40%):** Ship improvements to desktop and mobile apps to reduce friction and stuck states. Build dashboards and reports that make operational metrics trustworthy and transparent. Write software weekly across the full stack, leveraging AI agents to write and iterate on diagnostics, tests, and features alongside you.
**Field Support & Debugging (35%):** Be the first responder in support channels when site staff encounter upload, app, or device problems. Answer in plain language, unblock them quickly, and follow through to resolution. Diagnose and unblock the upload path when footage is stuck between capture cards and the cloud, tracing issues across device, card, app, network, and cloud layers while ensuring no data is lost or double-counted.
**Scaling the Operation (15%):** Turn recurring support questions into self-serve screens, clearer error messages, AI-powered diagnostics, and reusable guides. The goal is enabling the operation to grow without proportional growth in support overhead.
**Devices & Hardware (10%):** Work hands-on with physical devices when problems are hardware-related. Use AI-written tests to diagnose camera or battery issues, inspect devices, and swap components like cameras and buttons (no soldering). Help beta hardware reach operators' hands and report what breaks.
You will work in a small, fast-moving team where your work ships to the operation within the same week. The role mixes support conversations, focused software development days, and field days at capture sites. AI agents are a first-class part of how the team operates.
**Requirements:**
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Proficiency in at least one of: Electron, React Native, React/TypeScript, or Python
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, and network layers
- Ability to communicate clearly with non-technical users and translate between field problems and technical root causes
- Willingness to travel to capture locations regularly
- Based in or willing to relocate to the Philippines
**Nice to Have:**
- Experience shipping Electron or React Native apps to real users
- Background in support-adjacent engineering roles (field engineering, solutions engineering, IT for operations teams)
- Hardware tinkering experience: Raspberry Pi, single-board computers, cameras, device disassembly, 3D printing for jigs and mounts
- Familiarity with cloud storage, upload pipelines, SQL/Postgres, or fleet/IoT management
