OpenAI's Robotics team is seeking a Field Engineer to own the day-to-day technical health of a fleet of robotic workcells deployed in live operational environments. This role sits at the intersection of software, robotics hardware, and operations—you'll diagnose and resolve failures spanning mechanics, electronics, controls, and software; partner with technicians and engineers to improve fleet support processes; and build tools, documentation, and diagnostic playbooks that enable operators and technicians to work more effectively.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as engineering owner for fleet uptime and reliability
- Troubleshoot complex failures across hardware, electronics, controls, software interfaces, logs, and configuration
- Partner with technicians, operators, and engineering teams to improve scalable support processes
- Design and specify lightweight hardware and software tools for monitoring, diagnostics, and recovery
- Create documentation, SOPs, and diagnostic playbooks that translate engineering insights into repeatable floor practice
- Support prototype systems through transition to scalable operations
- Manage tickets, maintain issue history, and escalate appropriately
- Write analysis scripts to identify fleet trends and reliability opportunities
- Provide failure reports and operational feedback to improve system design
You should have 5+ years supporting electromechanical, robotic, or automation systems in production, R&D, lab, or field environments. You're comfortable troubleshooting messy real-world failures under time pressure, can work across mechanical, electrical, controls, and software boundaries, and have strong organizational habits around tickets and documentation. A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Computer Engineering, or related field is required.
Preferred: experience with robot middleware, motion-control stacks, Linux systems, fleet operations, CAD, and improving operational throughput. The role is based in San Francisco, 5 days per week, with relocation assistance available.
