Skydio is seeking a Failure Analysis Engineer to investigate, diagnose, and resolve failures in autonomous drone systems and subsystems. This role is central to driving product quality, reliability, and time-to-market for the world's leading US drone company.
You will perform detailed failure analysis on returned products, manufacturing defects, field failures, and reliability test failures across drone hardware including PCBs, power electronics, batteries, cameras, sensors, communication modules, motors, ESCs, GPS, IMUs, and embedded systems. You'll conduct systematic root cause analysis using methodologies such as 8D, 5 Why, Fishbone Diagram, Fault Tree Analysis, FMEA, and Pareto Analysis.
Key responsibilities include developing and executing diagnostic procedures using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, power analyzers, and thermal cameras. You'll interpret circuit schematics, PCB layouts, and wiring diagrams, and conduct functional, environmental, and stress testing to reproduce failures. You'll analyze component-level failures including ICs, MOSFETs, voltage regulators, capacitors, inductors, sensors, connectors, and cameras, evaluating solder joint quality, PCB defects, ESD damage, overheating, corrosion, vibration damage, and mechanical failures.
You will identify failure trends using field and production data, recommend design improvements to enhance product reliability, and drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) with Design, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality, and Production teams. You'll prepare comprehensive failure analysis reports with root cause, evidence, corrective actions, preventive actions, and risk assessment, maintaining failure databases and reliability metrics.
This is a cross-functional role requiring close collaboration with Design Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Embedded Software Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Supplier Quality, Reliability Engineering, Production, and Customer Support teams.
