Venus Aerospace is seeking an External Communications Specialist to lead media relations, content creation, and storytelling across owned and earned channels.
You will write and edit media pitches, announcements, web copy, talking points, and social content. Day-to-day responsibilities include supporting media relations (reporter research, media lists, pitching, inbound requests, follow-up, monitoring), identifying compelling stories behind the company's technology, programs, people, tests and milestones, and developing owned storytelling across multiple channels.
Key activities include interviewing engineers, technical leaders, and executives to translate complex work into clear, accurate, compelling narratives; shaping editorial cadence across Venus-owned channels; supporting communications around testing, flight, partnerships, launches, events and major company moments; researching reporters and outlets to develop targeted pitches; building reporter relationships; tracking media coverage and industry conversations; maintaining media materials and messaging resources; and capturing basic photo and video for day-to-day storytelling.
The role will start broad across writing, media relations, and owned content, with room to grow into deeper ownership of earned media, reporter relationships, and editorial storytelling as you develop experience and judgment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Approximately 3–5 years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, content, or a related field
- Strong writing and editing skills across different formats and audiences
- Good editorial judgment and instinct for what makes something interesting, relevant, or newsworthy
- Interest in media relations and willingness to pitch reporters
- Curiosity and eagerness to learn technical subject matter
- Comfort asking questions and working with engineers, executives, and subject-matter experts
- Good judgment around accuracy, messaging, and knowing when to ask for guidance
- Strong organization and follow-through across multiple projects and deadlines
- Interest in both earned media and owned storytelling
- Ability to work on-site in Houston
- Must meet ITAR requirements (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or eligible to obtain required authorizations from U.S. Department of State)
HELPFUL EXPERIENCE (not required):
- Pitching reporters or supporting an earned-media program
- Journalism or newsroom experience
- Communicating aerospace, defense, engineering, science, or other technical subject matter
- Writing across both earned and owned channels
- Basic photography, video, or digital-content skills
- Working in a growth-stage environment where teams, processes, and ways of working are still being built
