Salary: USD 100,000 - 170,000 / annual
General Matter is a venture-backed nuclear fuel enrichment company incubated by Founders Fund, focused on designing, building, and operating low-cost uranium enrichment services in the United States. The company's mission is to restore America's domestic nuclear fuel production capacity to power AI, advanced manufacturing, and next-generation nuclear reactors.
As an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Engineer, you will serve as a subject matter expert supporting the development of advanced enrichment technologies and pilot-scale operations. You will develop and implement practical, fit-for-purpose EHS programs to manage chemical, radiological, and industrial hazards while ensuring regulatory compliance and operational excellence.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting the Head of EHS in developing, implementing, and continuously improving the company's EHS management system
- Performing and documenting hazard analyses for R&D activities and pilot-scale operations
- Partnering with engineering, operations, and quality teams to ensure safe facility design, equipment installation, and commissioning
- Leading and participating in incident investigations, audits, inspections, and corrective action programs
- Developing and delivering EHS training programs and materials
- Conducting routine EHS audits, inspections, and compliance assessments
- Maintaining safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE), including inventory management and calibration
- Developing Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, and other safety procedures
- Managing hazardous waste handling and disposal in accordance with regulatory requirements
- Fostering a culture of safety ownership and continuous improvement across a multidisciplinary team

Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- 3+ years of professional EHS experience in industrial, manufacturing, or research environments
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, EPA environmental compliance, and industrial safety standards
- Experience supporting radiological operations, nuclear facilities, or pilot-scale process development
- Experience with hazardous materials management, industrial hygiene monitoring, and emergency preparedness programs
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
