Cloudflare is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Workers Runtime - Edge team, responsible for the execution layer that runs customer code at the edge of Cloudflare's global network. This team operates one of the most performance-critical and security-sensitive services at the company, handling tens of millions of requests per second.
You will lead a team of senior systems engineers working in C++ and Rust, owning both the production reliability of the runtime service across Cloudflare's entire fleet and driving its architectural evolution. Key responsibilities include:
- Leading a high-performing team of senior systems engineers on performance-critical infrastructure
- Driving major infrastructure initiatives including legacy system migrations, core abstraction redesigns, and next-generation runtime architecture
- Owning reliability and release safety for a service at massive scale; improving release processes, health monitoring, automated rollback, and enabling confident shipping
- Making strategic prioritization decisions between new customer-facing features and foundational investments in security, performance, and developer velocity
- Partnering with adjacent teams across the Developer Platform (compute, storage, networking, observability) to ensure the runtime supports the broader product roadmap
- Growing and developing the team through hiring, mentorship, and creating an environment for excellent work
The role requires deep technical credibility in large-scale, low-latency distributed systems. You should understand how to balance production urgency with patience for foundational improvements, be able to evaluate architectural proposals and C++/Rust systems tradeoffs, and earn the respect of a deeply technical team. Experience with multi-tenant systems, security-sensitive infrastructure, and performance optimization at scale is essential.
