GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager for the Gitaly team, responsible for leading a team of senior and staff engineers working on Gitaly, GitLab's Git data storage tier. This is a people-management role focused on guiding highly specialized engineers through complex, long-horizon technical work while building a culture of technical rigor, clear accountability, and ownership.
In this role, you will manage direct reports including hiring, performance management, and career development. You'll drive execution on complex projects spanning Git storage scaling, infrastructure performance work, and foundational Gitaly architecture improvements. Key responsibilities include balancing roadmap delivery with GitLab product and infrastructure priorities, supporting engineer growth through mentoring and stretch opportunities, and fostering strong asynchronous communication across a fully distributed, multi-timezone team.
You'll represent the team credibly with cross-functional partners including the Git team and other stakeholders who depend on Gitaly expertise. The role requires clear written communication, thoughtful technical judgment, and the ability to guide engineers through ambiguity, structured debate, and high-stakes technical tradeoffs in a service critical to GitLab's operations.
The Gitaly team builds and maintains GitLab's Git data storage tier, balancing long-running technical work with practical delivery. Strong collaboration with partner teams is central to success. Project areas include scaling Git storage and Gitaly-related infrastructure and foundational performance work.
Requirements:
- Proven experience managing engineering teams with direct reports, including hiring, performance management, and career development
- Management philosophy centered on building engineer agency and ownership, with credibility grounded in consistency, follow-through, and technical judgment
- Ability to guide highly specialized engineers through ambiguity, structured debate, high-stakes technical tradeoffs, and operating a critical service
- Strong written communication and remote, asynchronous collaboration skills across distributed, multi-timezone teams; comfort moving work forward in documents, issue threads, and asynchronous reviews
- Track record of delivering under pressure on ambiguous, long-horizon technical projects with clear outcomes; ability to reason from fundamentals about maintainability, technical debt, and long-term platform viability
- Hands-on background in version control systems, distributed systems, storage engines, or other low-level infrastructure domains; ability to engage credibly with systems code and architecture, ideally in Go or similarly performance-sensitive environments
