Strava is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Subscriptions team, which owns the payments and subscription platform powering how millions of athletes manage their accounts. This is a hands-on technical management role where you'll lead a small team of backend engineers while remaining actively involved in the codebase.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading a team of server engineers building Strava's subscription and payments backend infrastructure
- Owning the technical roadmap for payments and subscription systems, balancing platform investment, reliability, and delivery
- Driving both platform and product work, partnering with product and engineering leadership on priorities
- Writing code, owning technical designs, and making architecture decisions alongside your team
- Hiring, developing, and retaining engineers at multiple levels, coaching people through career growth
- Ensuring payment and subscription services remain reliable and healthy, owning on-call and incident response
- Cross-functional collaboration with product, design, accounting, and marketing teams
- Taking ownership of systems that handle payments, billing, and subscription state for millions of users
- Building long-term solutions with pragmatic tradeoffs between shipping now and platform investment
- Improving team processes and removing blockers
Required qualifications:
- 5+ years of professional software development experience in backend engineering
- 2+ years of engineering management experience or demonstrated tech lead experience coaching engineers and driving technical direction
- Proficiency in at least one backend language (Ruby, Java, Scala, Python, or Go)
- Experience with distributed systems and production infrastructure (MySQL, Redis, Kafka, Kubernetes, or similar)
- Experience with or genuine interest in payments, billing, or subscription systems
- Track record of helping engineers grow through direct feedback, mentorship, and sponsorship
